Antonio Caetano de Abreu Freire Egas Moniz (1874-1955) was a pioneer in the development of cerebral angiography. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology for "His discovery of the therapeutic value of leucotomy in certain psychoses". The appropriateness and value of that surgical procedure is still debated.
