Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (1910-1995) was a noted astrophysicist who studied stellar evolution. He showed that the final fate of a star depends on its mass. He calculated that massive stars would be unable to evolve into white dwarfs. This limiting size, approximately 1.4 solar masses, is called the Chandrasekhar Limit. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics (1983) for "His theoretical studies of the physical processes of importance to the structure and evolution of the stars." William Fowler (1911-1995) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics (1983) "For his theoretical and experimental studies of the nuclear reactions of importance in the formation of the chemical elements in the universe".
