1 SCHAFER, E. A. ADDRESS TO THE PHYSIOLOGICAL SECTION OF THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION [for the Advancement of Science]. (Schafer postulates a critical link between the pancreas and carbohydrate, sugar metabolism--heralding 20th century studies of diabetes).
Oxford London: [British Association], 1894. Paperback Very Good+
This is the crucial paper in which Schafer postulates that the Islets of Langerhans may play an important role in carbohydrate metabolism. Quoting from the paper: "...it is tempting to conjecture that it is these cells which are specially concerned in effecting that influence upon the metabolism of carbohydrates which experiment has shown to be peculiar to the pancreas". DSB (volume 12 pp 355-356) notes: "As early as 1894 Schafer pointed out on morphological grounds that the islet tissue might act collectively as an organ of internal secretion by means of which the pancreas produced its effect on the blood sugar level. An illustration of his prescience and of the oft-stated belief in the value of histology to physiology" Very Good+ First Separate Edition in original self wrappers. Inscribed in an unknown hand "From the author". Mild soil covers. Two horizontal folds. 8vo. 1-9 pp.

Sir Edward Albert Sharpey-Schafer (1850-1935) was a noted British physiologist who coined the word 'insulin' after theorizing that a single substance from the pancreas was linked to diabetes mellitus. He also coined the term 'endocrine' for the secretions of the ductless glands.
