In 1922 Jacobs abandoned research on chemotherapeutic agents, and turned to structural investigations of pharmacologically significant natural products derived from plants. He and his co-workers established the general structural features of several of the cardiac glycosides derived from Strophanthus, squill, and digitalis; the nonsugar moities (aglycones) were all shown to be steroids.
