Carol Greider (1961 ) and Elizabeth Blackburn (1948- ), together with Jack Szostak (1952 ) were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (2009) "for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase". The current paper is their work in which they report the discovery of the enzyme now called 'telomerase'.
