A Very Good+ hardback First Edition First Printing in original blue cloth binding with gilt lettering spine, , gilt decoration front cover. Mild cover edge wear, sun spine, front hinge repaired. 8vo. 358 pp + 8 pp. publisher's advertisement.
The Spanish Gypsy was the first of her several books of poetry (1868-1871). This copy inscribed in 1959 from Gordon Haight to Thomas Pinney. Haight wrote the definitive Eliot biography (1968), edited her letters in nine volumes (1954-1978), and a historical collection of criticism on Eliot (1965). He also edited many individual Eliot works including the OUP's Clarendon Edition of Mill on the Floss (1980). Thomas Pinney edited Eliot's essays (1963). Haight and Pinney were/are still active scholars in many other areas of British and American literature. Haight did editions of Emerson and Chapman; Pinney edited Macaulay's letters (six vols. 1974-1981), and Kipling's letters (three volumes to date, 1900-1996).
