Perrenkofer, pursuing Dobereiner's ideas, pointed to the parallelism between regular increases in equivalent weights of similar elements and increases in molecular weights of successive members of homologous series in organic chemistry... These papers describe the first combined feeding-respiration experiments using apparatus Pettenkofer devised. Pettenkofer and Voit used this device to study metabolism and respiration. They were the first to estimate the amounts of protein, fat and carboydrate broken down in the body.
