Waren Tay (1843-1927) was the first to describe amaurotic familial idiocy. His paper dealt primarily with the ocular manifestations. The condition later became known as Tay-Sachs disease after Bernard Sachs (1858-1944) description of the cerebral changes in 1887. See Garrison-Morton 4705.
