2 WILSON C. T. R. (Charles Thomas Rees). INVESTIGATIONS OF X-RAYS AND BETA-RAYS BY THE CLOUD METHOD. Part I. X-Rays And Part II Beta-Rays. Proceedings of the Royal Society Vol. CIV (104) pp. 1-24 & 192-212 +Plates.
London: Royal Society, 1923. Hardcover Fine
Fine First Edition extracts of Wilson's classic papers on his cloud chamber from the Proceedings of the Royal Society. Bound in modern marbled boards with the title and contents pages from the volume. University library blindstamp title page. No other markings. The 21 cloud chamber pictures of X-rays and beta-rays on coated stock printed recto only were the the culmination of many years research by Wilson and at last showed the full potential of this method as a tool for particle physicists.

Early in 1911 [Wilson] was the first person to see and photograph the tracks of individual alpha- and beta-particles and electrons... The event aroused great interest as the paths of the alpha-particles were just as W. H. Bragg had drawn them in a publication some years earlier. But it was not until 1923 [the current papers] that the cloud chamber was brought to perfection and led to his two, beautifully illustrated, classic papers on the tracks of electrons (Nobel Foundation). Dr. Wilson (1869-1959) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927 for "his method of making the paths of electrically charged particles visible by condensation of vapour". A. H. Compton was the co-winner for "his discovery of the effect named after him". (Particle Physics 100 Years of Discoveries p. 41).

3 WILSON, C. T. R. [Charles Thomas Rees] Nobel Laureate. ON A METHOD OF MAKING VISIBLE THE PATHS OF IONISING PARTICLES THROUGH A GAS In Proceedings of the Royal Society, Series A, Vol. LXXXV, pp. 285-288.
London: Royal Society, 1911. Hardcover Very Good+
Offered is a Very Good+ ex-library Vol. LXXXV of The Proceeding of the Royal Society in blue buckram binding with gilt lettering spine. Library numbers spine, bookplate front paste-down, blindstamp title page, stamp copyright page and rear paste-down. No other library markings. Label residue tiny snag spine. Minimal soil edges.

Wilson continued to experiment with ultraviolet radiation and other techniques for producing condensation effects, but soon concentrated on atmospheric electricity, not returning to the cloud chamber until December 1910. He designed an improved chamber with new methods of illumination and the possibility of photographing the results. At this time Wilson realized that it might be possible to reveal the track of an alpha ray be condensing water drops onto the ions produced by its passage. During March 1911 he saw this effect produced in his apparatus. Thus, the elucidation of phenomena seen in the Scottish hills led to the possibility of studying the processes of radioactivity, and the Wilson cloud chamber became an important piece of laboratory equipment. (DSB Vol. 14 p. 422).
