The inscription from William Stokes (1838-1900) is to his uncle the noted physicist George Gabriel Stokes (1819-1903). William Stokes was the fifth child and second son of the renowned physician William Stokes (1804-1878). The eponym "Cheyne-Stokes Respiration" is named for his father. The younger William was a renowned surgeon, professor at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Surgeon in Ireland to the Queen of England. George Stokes is best known for "Stoke's Law" which relates the force moving a body through a fluid to the velocity and size of the body and the viscosity of the fluid. A fine association copy.
