Father Walter Sidgreaves (1937-1919) was a Jesuit priest-asronomer. His major contributions included investigations of the solar spectrum the results of which were published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. In his research he showed that the sun was spectroscopically a variable star. In 1889, he became director of the Stonyhurst Observatory, a post he held for 22 years.
