Charles S. Sherrington (1857-1952) was a renowned physician & physiologist and the author of the classic work "the Integrative Action of the Nervous System" (1906). His major medical contributions were in neurology, spinal reflex and nerve function. He studied the distribution of the segmented skin fields and made the important discovery that about one-third of the nerve fibres are efferent, the remainder motor. In 1932 he and E. D. Adrian were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology for "Their discoveries regarding the functions of neurons".
