Jacobus Antonius (c.1500-c.1567) was an interesting Italian figure in the development of the idea of religious toleration. He converted to Protestantism and fled to Switzerland. His last years were in England where he served as a military engineer. Stratagematum Satanae was published in 1565. A central thesis is that Satan causes religious strife and warfare. He recommended methods to overcome this strategy including the renunciation of violence in religious matters, almost a revolutionary idea (then and even perhaps now..). He granted to the state the right to control religious practice but denied that force was a legitimate tool against heretics or to settle religious controversies. A very well preserved example of this important work.
